Location:  Meeting Room
Contact:
Description:  Discover Irish culture during this live musical performance with Tim Loftus. Through traditional tunes, stories, and slide presentations, he'll shed the shillelagh Irish of green beer, fake accents, and leprechauns to reveal some real Irish culture. Tim will be accompanied by Norah Garvey, Irish step-dancer.

We'll also discover how the banjo, a traditional African instrument, became so popular in traditional Irish bands; what the connection is between the Native American Choctaws and the Irish potato famine of the 1840s; and learn about the blind Irish harpist Turlough O"Carolan's tune Si Bheag, Si Mhor, the prettiest tune ever written.

This is a family-friendly performance. It is free and open to the public.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Oxford Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

5:30 PM - 6:30 PMClara Barton Presentation

Location:  Meeting Room
Contact:
Description:  This is an excellent program for instilling within children the value of helping others in need. Clara Barton's story also ties directly into Civil War studies, community service, and reinforces the importance of reading and getting a good education to achieve your personal goals and dreams.  From the time she was old enough to be a nurse within her own family, Clara’s life was dedicated to helping others. She accepted no pay as she taught poor children whose parents had no money to send them to school. She raised warehouses full of food, medicine and clothing during the Civil War, and then courageously went to the front to nurse the wounded and dying. Finally she started the American Red Cross which is her legacy today.  Oxford is also Clara Barton's hometown!

Be sure to join us for this informative presentation by Sheryl Faye.  Open to all ages!
